The Boy Scouts likely thought that by changing their name to appease the liberal left they would garner more support for the organization. However, one week after making the announcement that they would be changing their name, the Boy Scouts have been devastated by the last news they ever expected.
According to Faith Wire, the 118-year-old organization, Boy Scouts of America, recently announced that they are changing the name of the group to be more “welcoming” and “inclusive” to all youth. Early last year, the Boy Scouts group announced that they would start letting girls into their organization, and in 2019, they will allow them to become Eagle Scouts. Last week, the Boy Scouts of America released a statement explaining the name change, citing a campaign called “Scout Me In” as their main reason.
The decision to change the organization’s name was met with disgust by members who see merit in allowing young boys to have an outlet, where they can simply be around other young boys. And, now, only one week after announcing their name change, the Boy Scouts of America have already seen 425,000 boys drop out of the organization. The massive drop in membership is due to one very large church cutting ties with the group: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The tension between the Boy Scouts of America and people of faith began to build five years ago when the Scouts altered rules to allow openly gay boys to become part of the organization. This goes against Mormon beliefs. Two years later, the Scouts voted to allow gay Scoutmasters, which also perturbed the Mormon church. Over time, the Boy Scouts have only become progressively more liberal, which many Mormons find fault with. A Salt Lake City newspaper, Deseret News, stated that “signs of strain began to emerge years ago.”Even after the Boys Scouts began allowing openly gay males among their ranks, however, the Mormon church said that they would keep their affiliation with the organization because it recognized “the right of all religious chartered organizations to select their Scout leaders in accordance with their religious beliefs.”
Then, dramatic changes began last May, when the Mormon church dropped the Boy Scout from their programs. In the past, they had advertised Scouts for boys ages 14-17 in their church programs. This took place at the same time that the Scouts decided to allow transgender boys to join the organization.
The Church of the Latter Day Saints will ultimately withdraw all children from the Boy Scouts by 2019. With that, the Scouts will lose one-fifth of their membership, the 105-year partnership will come to an end, and the Mormons will advise boys to join other groups. “It’ll be a blow,” said Mark Griffin, president of the BSA’s Great Salt Lake Council. “We can’t say that it was a total surprise.”
With the Mormon church leading the way, it is now only a matter of time before other religious groups urge their members to withdraw from the Boy Scouts of America, as well. And, where will they find new members then? Typically, the liberal parents allowing their boys to dress up like little girls do not patron groups like the Boy Scouts. It looks like they’re going to be up a creek without a paddle in short order.
The Boy Scouts are currently learning the consequences of trying to appease those on the left who shout for “gender equality” until they’re blue in the face. I hope they’re happy. Pretty soon, the organization will no longer be able to sustain itself, and then, neither little boys or little girls will be able to take part.
