Former US President Donald Trump, despite criticism and controversy, has seen a rise in popularity among Black American voters as the 2024 presidential election approaches. Notably, Democratic Congresswoman Cori Bush labeled him the “former white supremacist in chief” in 2021, and Hillary Clinton called him “ignorant” and “racist” in 2018 following his derogatory comments about Haiti and African countries. Even Republican Nikki Haley condemned his recent comments about African Americans as “disgusting.” Nonetheless, polling data shows Trump’s support among Black voters increased from 8% in 2016 to 12% in 2020, with a recent GenForward survey indicating that 17% of Black voters would choose Trump if the election were held today. This shift in voter alignment, particularly among younger Black voters disillusioned with the Democratic Party’s return on their support, signals potential trouble for Democrats in the upcoming election. Historically, Black voters shifted to the Democratic Party during the New Deal era and solidified their support during the Civil Rights Movement. However, recent trends show a decline in the proportion of Black adults identifying as Democrats, with a notable shift towards Republican preferences, reflecting changing political dynamics and frustrations with the Democratic Party’s delivery on promises.
