Fani Willis, the Fulton County District Attorney, delivered a defiant speech at a Black church outside Atlanta on Thursday, addressing her critics. Although she did not name individuals, her remarks appeared to be aimed at Donald Trump and others who have criticized her investigation into the former president’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Willis, who secured indictments last year against Trump and 18 of his associates, has faced months of criticism. The backlash has included racist and sexist attacks, particularly after it was revealed she hired a special prosecutor with whom she had a romantic relationship. This prosecutor has since stepped down from the case.
Speaking to an audience of Black church clergy and congregants, Willis shared that friends often express concern for her well-being. “I live the experience of a Black woman who is attacked and oversexualized,” she said. “I’m tired of hearing these idiots call my name as ‘fanny’ in an attempt to humiliate me because, like silly schoolboys, the name reminds them of a woman’s rear.”
Trump has mocked Willis by mispronouncing her name, which is pronounced FAH’-nee. During a rally in Ohio in March, he said, “fanny, like your ass,” when referring to her. Willis explained that her father, “a strong, educated, conscious Black man,” gave her the name Fani Taifa, which means “prosperous people” in Swahili.
Willis’ outspoken nature is not new, but her public comments have been used by defense attorneys for Trump, drawing admonishment from the judge overseeing the case. The Georgia appeals court is currently reviewing whether she should remain on the case.
At the annual planning meeting of the Georgia AME church, Willis assured the crowd that she is not deterred by insults. “What I’m here to tell you is to not concern yourself with insults of me. I promise you, I don’t concern myself with them,” she said, receiving affirmations throughout her 25-minute speech. “I am too busy working 15-hour days trying to use every talent God gave me to fulfill my God-given purpose.”
Willis emphasized her commitment to holding all lawbreakers accountable, mirroring her response to questions about prosecuting a former president. “No one is above the law,” she reiterated.
The August indictment accuses Trump and others of participating in a scheme to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. While four defendants have pleaded guilty, Trump and the remaining defendants have pleaded not guilty.
Since the indictment, Willis has been targeted by Republican lawmakers in Atlanta and Washington, who have launched investigations into her office. She has had a particularly contentious exchange with U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, who has questioned her motivations.
During her speech, Willis appeared to take another swipe at Jordan, saying, “We have politicians that spend no time doing their elected purpose. In fact, we got a clown in Washington D.C. who’s been elected for the purpose to make his community safer and pass laws. But he’s been sitting there for 17 years and passed zero laws.” Jordan entered Congress in 2007, 17 years ago. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
