In recent months, the issue of non-citizens voting illegally in the U.S. has become a significant election-year talking point for Republicans. They argue that new legislation is needed to protect the integrity of the vote amid unprecedented levels of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Although voting by non-U.S. citizens is already illegal in federal elections and there is no substantial evidence it is occurring in significant numbers, Republican lawmakers are prioritizing the issue. They are introducing legislation and ballot measures aimed at keeping it in the public eye. This ensures the topic will remain prominent in voters’ minds as the election approaches.

Republicans in Congress are advocating for the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. Additionally, Republican legislatures in at least six states have placed measures to prevent non-citizen voting on the November 5 ballot, with at least two more states considering similar actions.

“American elections are for American citizens, and we intend to keep it that way,” said House Administration Committee Chairman Rep. Bryan Steil of Wisconsin during a recent hearing on the topic.
