As internal discussions about President Joe Biden’s 2024 candidacy intensify among Democratic party insiders, with some beginning to publicly dissent, there is a concerted effort to support Vice President Kamala Harris as the frontrunner in a potential post-Biden Democratic primary.
Despite her persistently low polling numbers, Harris would likely become the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination if Biden steps aside. Her advantages include inheriting Biden’s substantial campaign resources and the ability to campaign on the current administration’s record.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre recently referred to Harris as “the future of the party” during a press briefing. Although she has faced unpopularity as vice president, Harris outperformed Biden in a hypothetical matchup against Trump in a recent post-debate poll.
Senator Tim Kaine (D., Va.), who ran as Hillary Clinton’s vice-presidential candidate in 2016, highlighted Harris’s role as a prominent advocate for pro-choice policies. “I have great confidence in the president and vice president,” Kaine stated to National Review at the Capitol. “Since the Dobbs decision, Kamala’s profile has risen significantly. She has been more visible in Virginia and other states, performing well.”
Harris, tasked with immigration policy, initially struggled to attract positive media coverage as border issues intensified during Biden’s first two years. Rather than focusing on enforcement, which might have alienated her progressive supporters, she traveled extensively to Central and South America to address the “root causes” of immigration. Meanwhile, record numbers of illegal immigrants continued to enter the U.S.
However, Harris appears to have gained traction among left-wing media and progressive activists by touring the country to highlight the risks to abortion rights posed by a potential second Trump term.
Despite Biden’s assertions that he is not stepping down, a memo advocating for Harris’s candidacy circulated among Democratic operatives last weekend. The memo outlines Harris’s perceived democratic legitimacy and electoral strengths relative to Biden, particularly in light of the current crisis of confidence within the party.
