In a moment that set political and cultural corners of the internet ablaze, Rep. Jasmine Crockett became the center of controversy—not for what she said, but how she said it. During a heated congressional exchange, she uttered a phrase familiar in countless Black households: “Chile, please.” For many Black Americans, this was a moment of cultural authenticity. For others, particularly critics unfamiliar with **African American Vernacular English (AAVE)**, it was labeled “ghetto,” “unprofessional,” or worse.
Let’s be clear: AAVE—sometimes wrongly dismissed as “Ebonics”—is a legitimate dialect with deep historical roots. It is not slang, nor is it bad English. It has grammar rules, structure, and cultural significance. Yet when Black public figures like Crockett use it in formal settings, it often becomes weaponized against them.
The term “ghetto” in this context doesn’t critique speech—it polices identity. It implies that to be authentically Black in your communication is to be inherently lesser, unrefined, or out of place. That’s not language policing—that’s cultural erasure.
Critics weren’t upset about Crockett’s behavior. They were uncomfortable with her authenticity. AAVE isn’t a bug—it’s a feature of Black cultural expression. And when it shows up in halls of power, it challenges the unspoken demand that success requires assimilation.
Crockett’s use of AAVE wasn’t unprofessional. It was a reminder that power doesn’t have to come at the expense of culture. And maybe, just maybe, it’s time America learns to listen without flinching when Black voices speak in their own tongue.
Because the real problem isn’t what was said. It’s that some people believe there’s only one “right” way to speak—and that’s a lie as old as America itself.
