Proceedings quickly devolved Thursday night during a House Oversight Committee markup on holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt, with GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez briefly locked in a heated exchange.
The panel convened to consider holding Garland in contempt for refusing to turn over audio recordings of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur. Tensions escalated when Greene made a controversial remark about Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s appearance, sparking outrage among committee members.
Greene began by questioning Democrats about employing the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the criminal trial of former President Donald Trump in New York. This line of questioning aligns with Republican efforts to undermine the case against Trump by targeting Merchan’s daughter due to her ties to Democratic groups.
Crockett, a freshman lawmaker from Texas, questioned Greene’s focus, asking, “Do you know what we’re here for?”
Greene retorted, “I don’t think you know what you’re here for … I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”
Ocasio-Cortez immediately intervened, calling for Greene’s words to be struck from the record. “That is absolutely unacceptable. How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person,” Ocasio-Cortez declared.
Greene dismissively responded to Ocasio-Cortez, “Are your feelings hurt?”
Ocasio-Cortez replied, “Oh, girl. Baby girl. Don’t even play.”
Greene shot back, “Baby girl? I don’t think so.”
During a break, with her microphone still on, Ocasio-Cortez commented to her Democratic colleagues that Greene’s “ego is bruised” and that she “doesn’t want to say sorry to nobody for nothing. She is going to learn.”
Committee Chair James Comer eventually asked Greene if she would strike her words. While Greene agreed to strike her comments, she refused to apologize. “I’m not apologizing,” Greene asserted.
Ocasio-Cortez then made another motion to strike Greene’s words, to which Greene responded, “Why don’t you debate me?”
Ocasio-Cortez replied, “I think it’s pretty self-evident.”
Greene continued, “Yeah, you don’t have enough intelligence.”
Despite the contentious atmosphere, the majority of Republicans voted to allow Greene to continue speaking. However, GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado joined Democrats in voting to silence Greene for the remainder of the markup. Ultimately, the panel voted to advance contempt proceedings against Attorney General Garland.
