Biden Administration Opposes SAVE Act, Citing Existing Voter Safeguards
President Joe Biden has signaled his intent to block the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a proposed legislation requiring proof of American citizenship for voter registration in federal elections. The SAVE Act, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and co-sponsored by over 100 House Republicans, aims to mandate state election officials to verify citizenship before adding applicants to voter rolls.
“Federal law has been interpreted to prohibit states from checking to see if you’re a citizen even though, technically, the law says you must be a citizen,” Roy stated in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News.
In response, the Biden administration released a statement opposing the SAVE Act, highlighting existing laws and safeguards. The administration emphasized that it is already a federal crime for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, punishable by imprisonment and fines. Moreover, making a false claim of citizenship or unlawfully voting can result in removal from the United States and a permanent bar to re-entry.
The White House argues that current state safeguards are effective in maintaining accurate voter rolls and ensuring voter eligibility, pointing out that instances of noncitizens voting in federal elections are exceedingly rare. The administration contends that the SAVE Act would unnecessarily complicate the voter registration process for eligible Americans and risk purging eligible voters from the rolls.
Instead of the SAVE Act, the Biden administration advocates for the Freedom to Vote Act, which aims to restore voting rights to millions of former felons and implement nationwide mail-in voting and automatic voter registration.
House Democrats are actively campaigning against the SAVE Act, creating a challenging situation for swing district representatives as the November elections approach.
