Congratulations to Gymnast Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas / Nickname: the “Flying Squirrel” Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas made history. She is a member of the US Women’s Gymnastics team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She won gold medals in both the individual and team all-around competitions (Gold Medalist). She is the first African American and first woman of color in Olympic history to become the individual all-around champion, and the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics. She is also a member of the gold-winning US team at the 2011 World Championships. Gabby is 16 years old. Gabby, born in Virginia on December 31, 1995, is daughter of Timothy Douglas and Natalie Hawkins. She has 3 siblings, all into sports, as well. She began training in gymnastics at age 6 when her older sister (“Aerilla”) convinced her mother to enroll her in gymnastics classes. When Gabby was 8-years old, she won an all-around gymnastics award for her level at the 2004 Virginia State Championships. She then moved to Iowa to train under Liang Chow. Since then, she has been making a name for herself in competitions across the United States, as well as Mexico, Italy and Japan.
