President Joe Biden’s campaign unveiled a new advertisement on Wednesday, just ahead of the long Independence Day weekend. The ad argues that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which granted presidents “absolute immunity” from prosecution for official acts, would effectively grant Donald Trump unchecked power if he were to return to office.
“Nearly 250 years ago, America was founded in defiance of a king, under the belief that no one was above the law, not even the President, until now,” the ad begins.
The narrator asserts that the 6-3 Supreme Court decision permits Trump to “ignore the law,” despite Chief Justice John Roberts’ majority opinion stating the contrary. The ad contends that the ruling allows Trump to bypass legal constraints, referencing his previous actions and statements.
“The same Trump Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade ruled that the President can ignore the law, even to commit a crime — because Donald Trump asked them to,” the ad continues. “He’s already led an insurrection, and threatened to be a dictator on Day One. Donald Trump can never hold this office again.”
The advertisement, aimed at battleground states and younger voters, highlights the conservative justices who supported the ruling.
Biden-Harris 2024 Communications Director Michael Tyler issued a statement alongside the ad, asserting that the Supreme Court has effectively given Trump “carte blanche to do basically anything he wants if he ever walks back into the Oval Office.” Tyler emphasized the gravity of the decision, noting Trump’s campaign promises and potential actions if re-elected.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision, Biden’s re-election team held a press call expressing concerns that the ruling could enable Trump to wield authoritarian power. Quentin Fulks, the principal deputy campaign manager for Biden-Harris 2024, stated, “The Supreme Court just gave Trump a remission slip to assassinate and jail whoever he wants to gain power,” calling it “a pivotal moment for our country.”
The ad, set to air in key states, underscores the Biden campaign’s strategy to rally support by highlighting the perceived threats of a second Trump presidency, especially in light of recent judicial developments.
