Dear Stef:
I have two sons, now 7 and 1 1/2. I hear you talking with adults about how they relate to their parents, and I’m terrified that the way we are raising them will result in them having no particular reason to want to be around me when they’re older, but I don’t feel like I know how to change.
To clarify, the biggest issue is that I have a bad temper. We do not hit or spank them. But my wife has been telling me for some time that I am often in a kind of grouchy mood around the house, and when something particularly frustrates me, I’m quick to start yelling about it. I’ll often end up apologizing to my sons afterwards, but there’s only so much that can do. I think my wife is right and I’m scared that I am potentially wrecking our future relationship. I don’t know how to change this habit, though. I love them and I want the best for them, but I’m worried that I’m making myself a monster in their eyes. Do you think you could talk me through this?
