đź”´Biden Stands Reads From the Prompter “I’m Staying in the Race”đź”´
President Joe Biden, striving to salvage his embattled reelection campaign, defiantly announced, “I’m staying in the race,” during a campaign rally in a crucial battleground state on Friday. This declaration comes as he prepares for a pivotal network television interview, where his responses will be closely examined for signs of his competency and fitness for office.
Addressing around 300 supporters at a Wisconsin middle school, Biden acknowledged his subpar debate performance from last week, admitting, “I can’t say it was my best performance.” Amid speculation about his next steps, he firmly stated, “I am running, and I’m going to win again. I beat Donald Trump; I will beat him again.”
The rally preceded an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, seen as a critical moment for Biden. The 81-year-old Democrat is under immense pressure to withdraw from the race following his disastrous debate against Republican Donald Trump, which raised doubts about his capability to serve another term.
The interview, taped after the rally in Madison, Wisconsin, is expected to be rigorous. Two individuals familiar with Biden’s preparation, speaking anonymously, confirmed that he had been preparing intensively for the interview.
There is a consensus that Biden cannot afford another “bad day,” as he described his debate performance. A mediocre showing might not be sufficient to alleviate concerns about his fitness for office.
The White House has heightened the stakes for Biden’s interview, with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasizing that “millions of Americans” are expected to tune in.
Despite growing private unease among Democratic lawmakers, donors, and strategists following Biden’s debate debacle, most have refrained from publicly criticizing him. They are awaiting his weekend appearances and the Stephanopoulos interview to see if he can restore confidence. The full interview will air on ABC on Friday night.
However, at least three House Democrats have called for Biden to step down as the nominee. Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) voiced his concerns in a radio interview on Thursday, joining Reps. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) and RaĂşl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) in seeking an alternative candidate.
“President Biden has done enormous service to our country, but now is the time for him to follow in one of our founding fathers, George Washington’s footsteps, and step aside to let new leaders rise up and run against Donald Trump,” Moulton told WBUR.
