Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), the Republican vice-presidential nominee, privately informed donors that running against Vice President Kamala Harris, rather than President Joe Biden, presents a more formidable challenge. This admission contrasts with the Trump campaign’s public displays of confidence. Vance’s remarks were made at a fundraiser in Golden Valley, Minnesota, following Biden’s unexpected withdrawal on July 21.
“All of us were hit with a little bit of a political sucker punch,” Vance stated, according to a recording of his speech. He noted that Harris does not carry the same “baggage” as Biden, emphasizing her younger age and lack of the same struggles Biden faced. Despite this, the Trump campaign has publicly maintained that Harris replacing Biden does not alter the race’s dynamics, arguing that she shares responsibility for public dissatisfaction with Biden’s leadership. On July 22, Vance told reporters there was no difference in running against Harris versus Biden, criticizing both for their stances on border policies and the Green New Deal.
Trump adviser Jason Miller echoed this sentiment in a Fox News interview, suggesting that Democrats had merely traded one problem for another by replacing Biden with Harris. Trump himself expressed nostalgia for running against Biden while dismissing Harris as “worse than Joe.”
However, Vance offered a different perspective to donors, highlighting the need for Republicans to shape public perceptions of Harris, who is less well-known than Trump or Biden. He outlined the campaign’s strategy to define Harris based on her past positions, including her stance on fracking, the “defund the police” movement, and decriminalizing unauthorized border crossings. The Harris campaign has clarified that she does not support banning fracking or decriminalizing border crossings, and she denounced “defund the police” after becoming Biden’s running mate.
Vance recounted a conversation with Trump senior adviser Susie Wiles, who expressed confidence in Trump’s victory due to public preference for his policies over Biden’s. Recent national polls show Trump and Harris within the margin of error, erasing Trump’s earlier leads over Biden.
Vance’s spokesman, Will Martin, emphasized in a statement that voters are becoming aware of Harris’s “weak, failed and dangerously liberal agenda,” claiming her far-left ideas are more problematic than Biden’s, particularly in key swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
