Democrats remain in disarray after party lawmakers convened Tuesday morning to discuss potential presidential candidates following President Joe Biden’s disappointing debate performance.
Biden, 81, who remains the de facto nominee, attempted to stabilize his candidacy on Monday by aggressively inviting primary challengers to the upcoming convention while simultaneously securing the support of key “Squad” members.
However, not all Democratic lawmakers are pleased with Biden remaining atop the ticket. Post-debate polling shows Biden losing ground in key swing states. A Suffolk University poll found that 41 percent of Democratic voters want Biden to withdraw from the race, while only 51 percent support his continued candidacy.
On Tuesday, Democrats gathered at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters to weigh their options. The meeting, initially planned for the Capitol Building, was moved to the DNC headquarters to minimize leaks during the potentially heated discussion, according to Axios. Despite these precautions, details were leaked to the media, with insiders characterizing the gathering as a “funeral” filled with “significant frustration” and “sadness.”
As the party grapples with internal divisions and voter dissatisfaction, the path forward for Democrats remains uncertain.
