A woman allegedly stabbed a 3-year-old boy to death with a kitchen knife in what authorities have described as a random attack outside a grocery store in North Olmsted, Ohio.
Julian Wood and his mother, Margot, were both attacked around 3 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle grocery store, located 15 miles from Cleveland. Local officials confirmed the details of the incident on Tuesday.
Responding to reports of a stabbing, officers found the suspect, 32-year-old Bionca Ellis, still holding the knife used in the fatal attack. First responders provided immediate aid to the victims. Julian was taken to St. John Medical Center, where he died from stab wounds to his back and chest. His mother was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Ellis, known to North Olmsted police for previous theft charges but with no known history of violent crime, was taken into custody without incident. She is currently held on a charge of aggravated murder, with potential additional charges pending.
Authorities believe the attack was random. “The investigation into the motive in this attack is still ongoing, but everything learned thus far points to this being a random act of violence,” police stated.
In a statement, North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones expressed her condolences to the Wood family. “This was a terrible tragedy for our entire community. As North Olmsted Mayor, and a mother myself, I cannot fathom what this family must be going through. To lose their youngest child in such a violent and senseless manner is absolutely heartbreaking.”
The North Olmsted police department continues to investigate the crime. The city is offering grief counseling to the workers who responded to the attack as the community begins the process of healing.
