Chase Oliver, a former Georgia Senate hopeful, has been crowned the Libertarian Party’s 2024 presidential nominee after a rigorous eight-hour voting session at their convention. Oliver, 38, now stands alongside independent candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Green Party candidate Jill Stein, and Cornel West as a significant third-party contender. “We did it! I am officially the presidential nominee,” Oliver announced on X. He becomes the first millennial to secure a notable third-party nomination.
During the Libertarian Convention at the Washington Hilton, both former President Donald Trump and Kennedy sought to align with the party, with Trump promising to pardon Ross Ulbricht and appoint a libertarian to his cabinet. Despite his efforts, Trump faced boos and criticism during his speech and did not secure the nomination. Oliver suggested to CNN that achieving over 2% of the national vote is a feasible goal, a benchmark the Libertarian Party neared in 2016 with 3.3% support.
Oliver initially trailed Michael Rectenwald but ultimately won after forming an alliance with Mike ter Maat, who later secured the vice-presidential nomination. Oliver, described as “armed and gay,” hails from Nashville and has shifted his political alignment from Democrat to Independent before joining the Libertarians. He previously ran for Georgia’s 5th congressional district in 2020 and the Georgia Senate in 2022, influencing the latter race by drawing over 2% of the vote.
Oliver aims to campaign across all 50 states, targeting younger voters and advocating for libertarian principles. His stance on social issues, including defending drag queen story hours and opposing strict border control, has stirred controversy among conservatives. With the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate showing Trump leading with 41.2%, followed by Biden at 39.4%, Kennedy at 10.6%, and both Stein and West at 1.8%, Oliver’s impact on the 2024 race remains to be seen.
