With great power, comes great responsibility. It seems Kim Kardashian West is attempting to learn that in the best way possible, using her name and resources to draw attention to what she views as a worthy cause. It appears President Donald Trump’s son in law Jared Kushner shares her passion for this particular cause and has teamed up with Kardashian West, joining forces in a rather unlikely duo to help get a 62-year-old woman out of prison.
As Vanity Fair frames it, Kushner — whose father once spent a few years in prison — likely sympathizes with her perspective. Although he is a bit of an “unlikely” criminal justice reform advocate, and his stance has put him at odds with some in the Trump administration, he believes strongly that this is something he must do.
“While Kanye West doubles down on his recent (and bad) opinion on slavery, Kim Kardashian is finding her own cause to champion: working to pardon a 62-year-old woman serving a life sentence over a nonviolent drug offense. According to Mic, Kardashian has already spoken with Jared Kushner on behalf of Alice Marie Johnson, who had spent 21 years in prison as of October 2017. That same month, Kardashian shared a Mic video on Johnson to her Twitter page writing, “This is so unfair . . .”
Kardashian’s team confirmed to Mic that she has been in touch “with the White House and is working to bring Johnson’s case to the president’s desk” in order to arrange a presidential pardon or clemency. In November, she hired a team of lawyers including Shawn Holley, known for her work with celebrity clients including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Snoop Dogg.
Kushner has been an unlikely proponent of criminal-justice reform, putting him at odds with Attorney General Jeff Sessions who has been vocal about his tough-on-crime approach. Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, have hosted dinners, inviting both Democrats and Republicans to discuss the cause, and they support a bill that would lighten sentences for nonviolent offenses and promote education, drug rehabilitation, and work training inside of prisons.”
The 62-year-old great-grandmother in question now serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense is Alice Marie Johnson. Kardashian West began to get involved in Johnson’s case enlisting her own personal team of elite lawyers including her Los Angeles-based attorney Shawn Holley, in an effort to advocate for Johnson’s early release. Kardashian West views life imprisonment for nonviolent crimes as a gross miscarriage of justice.
Johnson’s best hope at this point is either a presidential pardon or clemency, both of which former President Barrack Obama refused to offer Johnson. However, Johnson is filled with gratitude for those working tirelessly on her behalf in order to secure her early release. Kardashian West states she first learned of Johnson through an ACLU campaign to end mass incarceration. The campaign featured her story along with five other prisoners as examples of unfair sentencing.
Johnson says she first got involved in drug trafficking during a crisis period in her life. As a result of her gambling addiction, she lost her 10-year job at FedEx and got divorced. She then suffered the heartbreaking loss of her son, who passed away from a motorcycle accident. To make ends meet, she began trafficking illegal substances.
Mic reports: “Johnson was convicted and sentenced to life without parole in 1996 for her role facilitating communications in a cocaine trafficking operation in Memphis, Tennessee.
Johnson told Mic that she initially became involved in drug trafficking due to significant financial hardship after a string of unfortunate events in her life. She lost her job at FedEx due to a gambling addiction, her son was k****d in a motorcycle accident and her marriage ended in divorce.
“I went into a complete panic and out of desperation, I made one of the worst decisions of my life to make some quick money,” Johnson said.
She has now spent over two decades of her life behind bars.”
“In a November letter, Johnson wrote, “Ms. Kardashian you are literally helping to save my life and restore me to my family. I was drowning and you have thrown me a life jacket and given me hope.”
Johnson’s offense was the first time, yet Obama refused to grant her clemency in December 2016, when he granted clemency to 231 individuals, many of whom were convicted on drug-related charges.
