Poll: Majority of Independent Voters Want Biden to Exit 2024 Race After Debate
A JL Partners poll released on Friday found that 68 percent of independent voters believe President Joe Biden should withdraw from the 2024 race following his poor debate performance, while only 32 percent think he should remain the Democrats’ nominee, Breitbart reports.
The pressure on Biden to step aside intensified after his Thursday night debate, which left many Democrats and media figures in a state of panic. Despite the backlash, a Biden campaign official confirmed that the president will continue his re-election bid and plans to participate in the ABC News debate in September.
Among independent voters who supported Biden in 2020, 41 percent now think he should drop out of the race, according to the poll.
Support for former President Donald Trump increased among independents, with 44 percent indicating they plan to vote for him—an increase of about four points post-debate. Conversely, Biden’s support among independents fell, with only 24 percent saying they intend to vote for him, down from 28 percent before the debate.
The poll surveyed 805 independent voters immediately after the debate. The survey did not include a margin of error.
These post-debate results align with pre-debate findings. A New York Times/Siena poll released earlier this week showed that 64 percent of voters believe the Democratic Party should replace Biden as its nominee, highlighting a lack of enthusiasm for his re-election campaign.
