Kamala Harris faced criticism online after debuting a new accent at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Phoenix Awards Dinner on Saturday night. During her speech, Harris greeted the crowd, saying, “Hello to all of my Divine Nine brothers and sisters” and “And to all my HBCU brothers and sisters.” The phrase “Divine Nine” referenced historically Black sororities, one of which Harris joined while attending Howard University.
The video clip from the event quickly circulated on social media, with the account “End Wokeness” posting, “BREAKING: Kamala Harris unveils a new accent at the Black Caucus Dinner.” Other users echoed this sentiment, questioning the authenticity of Harris’s accent. Collin Rugg, with over 1.4 million followers on X (formerly Twitter), remarked, “Kamala has brought out this new accent throughout the campaign at different times.” Similarly, James Hirsen, a columnist, joked, “Kamala Harris accent du jour,” referencing Harris’s varying speech patterns while campaigning in different regions.
Critics pointed out Harris’s Canadian upbringing and accused her of altering her accents to suit various campaign stops. Fox News Digital reached out to the Harris campaign for comment, but no response has been reported. Earlier in the month, Harris also faced scrutiny for seemingly using different accents during speeches in Detroit and Pittsburgh, which sparked a question from Fox News’ Peter Doocy to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. Jean-Pierre dismissed the inquiry, stating that Americans care more about pressing issues like the economy and healthcare.
Harris’s recent efforts to connect with Black voters were highlighted during the dinner, as President Biden praised her historic role and potential to become the first female president. Later in the week, Harris planned to meet with members of the National Association of Black Journalists and participate in a rally featuring Oprah Winfrey.
