A post-debate poll published Friday shows former President Donald Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris by a wider margin than he leads President Joe Biden, amid discussions among Democrats about potentially replacing Biden with Harris on the 2024 Democratic presidential ticket. The HarrisX poll, conducted June 28-30, 2024, among 1,500 registered voters with a margin of error of ±2.5 percentage points, indicates Trump leads Harris by seven percentage points in a general election matchup. In comparison, Trump leads Biden by four percentage points according to the same poll.
Since Biden’s poor performance at the presidential debate, there has been increasing talk among Democratic lawmakers, staffers, strategists, and donors about possible replacements and the logistics of such a move. According to Reuters, there is a growing consensus that Harris would be the easiest choice, as she could seamlessly take over the funds and campaign infrastructure of the Biden-Harris campaign. Additionally, the optics of bypassing a Black woman for another candidate could be problematic for the Democratic base. However, Harris’s tenure as vice president has been seen as underwhelming by some, and she is only marginally more popular than Biden.
