The Harris 2024 campaign has faced mounting pressure to address the ongoing controversy surrounding Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the recently announced Democratic vice presidential nominee. Since Vice President Kamala Harris revealed Walz as her running mate earlier this week, questions have arisen regarding false claims Walz has made about his military service.
Walz, who served 24 years in the Army National Guard before retiring as a master sergeant in 2005, has come under scrutiny for misrepresenting his military career. Despite never being deployed to war or engaging in combat, Walz has repeatedly suggested otherwise. Notably, he has inaccurately claimed to be a retired sergeant major, a rank higher than he actually achieved, and has falsely implied that he served “in war.”
These misleading assertions were further amplified in a video released by the Harris campaign, where Walz claims he carried weapons “in war” and inaccurately stated that he served for 25 years, rather than his actual 24 years and one month.
The controversy deepened as veterans who served alongside Walz accused him of abandoning his unit just as they were preparing to deploy to Iraq at the height of the war. Walz retired shortly before his unit’s deployment, a decision that has drawn significant criticism from his former comrades.
Republican vice presidential nominee Senator JD Vance (R-OH) responded sharply to the allegations against Walz during a press conference on Wednesday. Vance, a Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq, contrasted his own service with Walz’s decision to retire before deployment. “When the United States of America asked me to go to Iraq, to serve my country, I did it… When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him,” Vance said, calling Walz’s actions “shameful.”
When pressed on the issue, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre sidestepped the allegations, emphasizing Walz’s long service in the Army National Guard and his background as a high school teacher and coach. “This is someone who enlisted at 17 years old to serve his country… I think his bio speaks for itself, who he is speaks for itself, his record speaks for itself,” Jean-Pierre stated, declining to address the specific accusations of misleading statements about his military service.
The Harris campaign has yet to provide a detailed response to the allegations, leaving the controversy to continue as the 2024 election draws nearer.
