These Sailors Visiting England’s Busiest Port Can’t Leave the Waiting Room | Op-Docs

Britain’s busiest container port — located, ironically, in the pro-Brexit county of Suffolk — sits in the town of Felixstowe, on the country’s eastern shore. Here, crews from around the world disembark from their ships… but often only to spend their day off in the port’s Seafarers’ Centre, a waiting room where they can call home, play music and buy souvenirs of a place they are only barely visiting.
In this week’s Op-Doc, “Seafarers,” director Eleanor Mortimer takes us inside the Seafarer’s Centre to paint a contemplative portrait of sailors at rest, as the machinery of global trade grinds on around them.
