This week, New York state officials seized and euthanized Peanut the Squirrel, sparking significant backlash from his owner, Mark Longo, and a widespread social media outcry. Peanut, a beloved pet with nearly 600,000 Instagram followers, was confiscated alongside Fred, a raccoon, from Longo’s home in Pine City, near the Pennsylvania border. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reportedly acted after receiving complaints about potential rabies risks and the illegal keeping of wildlife.
Peanut became an online sensation through videos and photos showcasing playful activities, such as eating waffles and jumping through hoops, at Longo’s animal sanctuary, P’Nut’s Freedom Farm, which houses over 300 animals. Longo rescued Peanut seven years ago after finding him as an orphaned baby squirrel.
The confiscation turned political, with figures like Elon Musk and Congressman Nick Langworthy criticizing the DEC’s actions. Musk tweeted against government interference with pets, while Langworthy highlighted misplaced priorities within the DEC, emphasizing the need for resources for flood control efforts instead. The DEC and Chemung County Department of Health defended the euthanization, citing rabies concerns in the area and a reported bite incident during the seizure. The procedure, deemed essential for accurate rabies testing, requires euthanizing animals as live testing methods do not exist.
The situation drew further online reactions, including fake statements attributed to Donald Trump, which were clarified as false by his campaign. Memes and viral posts continued to keep Peanut’s story in the public eye, symbolizing broader debates over animal rights and governmental policies.
