Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 20 days without holding a formal press conference since becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, although she did answer a few questions on an airport tarmac last Thursday. Harris, who became the de facto nominee after President Biden endorsed her on July 21 following his exit from the race, has been active on the campaign trail, attending various events and giving informal remarks to reporters. However, she has yet to participate in a formal press conference or a wide-ranging interview in the 20 days since securing the nomination.
Amid growing criticism, Harris briefly spoke to reporters traveling with her in Michigan on Thursday, addressing her upcoming debate with former President Trump scheduled for September 10 on ABC and defending the military record of her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. She also mentioned that her team is working to arrange an interview by the end of the month, though no one-on-one sit-down interview has been conducted thus far.
Harris’s selection of Walz as her running mate has generated significant attention, yet the duo has not faced formal questioning in interviews or press conferences. This has drawn the ire of GOP vice-presidential candidate JD Vance, who urged the media to press Harris to fulfill her responsibilities as a presidential candidate by engaging more openly with the press.
Vance, during a press conference in Detroit, challenged reporters to “show a little bit of self-awareness” and push Harris to participate in a formal press conference. He emphasized the importance of transparency, urging the media to stop giving Harris what he described as a “honeymoon” period and to demand that she engage more fully with the public.
National Review’s Noah Rothman and NewsBusters’ Tim Graham have echoed these sentiments, highlighting the need for Harris to face the press in a formal setting. Graham suggested that Harris might follow President Biden’s 2020 strategy of limiting press access, a tactic that was criticized as avoiding accountability.
As the November election approaches, the pressure on Harris to hold a formal press conference continues to mount, with both critics and media figures calling for greater transparency from the Democratic ticket.
