Conservative media experienced a rare period of self-reflection, as a string of scandals shook the community and placed several high-profile influencers under scrutiny. Traditionally unified in their support of the MAGA movement, some prominent figures found themselves embroiled in public feuds over controversial topics such as antisemitism, revisionist history, and Russian disinformation.
At the heart of the controversy was Tucker Carlson, who faced significant backlash for an episode of his podcast featuring guest Darryl Cooper. Cooper, a polarizing figure, referred to Winston Churchill as “the chief villain” of World War II, sparking outrage across the political spectrum. Elon Musk initially promoted the interview on his platform X (formerly Twitter), praising Cooper as “the best and most honest popular historian” in America. However, after being accused of Nazi apologia by users, Musk distanced himself from the comments.
Even some conservative voices were shocked by Carlson’s choice of guests, including previous interviews with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite losing his top-rated show on Fox News, Carlson’s influence within the “America First” movement remained significant. He received a warm reception at the Republican National Convention in July, where some supporters even pushed for him to join Donald Trump’s 2024 ticket as his running mate.
Carlson’s continued influence was set to be on display later in the month when he was scheduled to appear alongside Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) at the “Tucker Carlson Live Tour” in Pennsylvania. The event was expected to feature other prominent figures, including Donald Trump Jr. and Alex Jones.
