In Wauwatosa, a small town in Wisconsin, city workers have received guidelines on holiday decorations to avoid potential offense. The unusual recommendations were outlined in an email by Deputy City Administrator Melissa Cantarero Weiss, under the direction of City Administrator James Archambo.
A central piece of advice in the email is to refrain from using red and green decorations in public spaces during the Christmas holidays to prevent any potential sensitivities. Weiss urged city workers to embrace “inclusive decorating practices” and opt for more “neutral and inclusive” choices. The email suggests using decorations with a “winter theme,” such as snowflakes or representations of snow people.
The guidelines, aimed at the town’s 48,000 residents, reflect an effort to create an inclusive and considerate holiday environment within municipal buildings, steering away from traditional color schemes that may be associated with specific religious or cultural celebrations.
