It has now been more than three months since the Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which left seventeen innocent students and staff members dead. As the entire nation continues to mourn with the families affected by this senseless tragedy, a chilling new video has surfaced, leaving survivors of the shooting shaken.
Prosecutors on Wednesday released never-before-seen cell phone videos of Parkland gunman Nikolas Cruz planning the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 people dead, WPLG-TV reports. “You’re all going to die. Pew pew pew. I can’t wait,” Cruz says to the camera in one chilling video.
The 19-year-old introduces himself as “Nick, the next school shooter of 2018,” in the footage, then names the type of gun he will use to carry out the February 14 shooting — an AR-15 rifle. He says that the shooting “will be a big event,” and that everyone will know him. Cruz also lays out part of his plan — to take an Uber to the school.
Cruz was able to obtain the gun he used to kill 17 people at MSD because he was part of a controversial program rolled out by the Obama administration which prevented him from being arrested for crimes he committed as a teenager. Without an arrest record, he was easily able to pass a background check, bypassing gun control laws instituted to prevent this kind of massacre.
Broward school district officials admitted Sunday that the confessed Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School gunman was assigned to a controversial disciplinary program, after the superintendent repeatedly claimed Nikolas Cruz had “no connection” to the alternative punishment designed to limit on-campus arrests.
Two sources with knowledge of Cruz’s discipline records told WLRN he was referred to the so-called PROMISE Program for a three-day stint after committing vandalism at Westglades Middle School in 2013. [Source: WLRN]
In other clips, Cruz talks about his state of mind, saying, “I am nothing,” and, “My life is meaningless,” and, “I hate everyone and everything.” He ends the footage by professing his love for a girl named Angie. It’s unclear who she is, but Cruz says he looks forward to meeting her in the afterlife.
As the newly released videos of Cruz show that he had meticulously planned the shooting at MSD, prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty in his case, according to News4JAX. Meanwhile, Cruz’s legal team has advocated for a deal in which the teen would plead guilty in exchange for a sentence of life in prison.
As expected, the videos have been excruciatingly difficult to watch for survivors of the shooting and the parents of victims. Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow was killed in the shooting, told CNN that he felt conflicted by the release of the videos. He doesn’t want the shooter to get more publicity, but he also believes the recordings are important evidence.
Pollack said Cruz, who has a history of treatment for mental illness, won’t be able to claim at trial that he was insane or that he didn’t know what he was doing. “He knew what he was doing,” said the grieving father. “It’s all premeditated murder.”
Please continue to keep those affected by this tragedy in your prayers. While time eases all pain, it will be quite awhile before the friends and families of the Parkland victims find peace.
