Officials announced on Saturday that the death toll resulting from the Maui wildfires has climbed to 89, prompting Hawaii Governor Josh Green to issue a warning that the count is likely to rise even further.
This updated fatality figure now positions the wildfire, which wreaked havoc upon the town of Lahaina, as the most lethal wildfire in contemporary U.S. history, surpassing the 2018 Camp Fire in California that claimed 85 lives.
While individuals anxiously await updates about their loved ones and homes, the community has taken decisive action to provide assistance to those who have lost everything.
In Maui, a multitude of volunteers convened near Maalaea Harbor to assemble water, gasoline, and other essential supplies. Some raised their voices in a unified chant, galvanizing those gathered to offer aid as they loaded supplies into vehicles.
“Maui stands with Maui now, and Oahu has come here to stand with Maui,” remarked community member Anthony Jensen to NBC News. “We are united as a single extended family, one cohesive ‘ohana, and our current objective is to offer unwavering support to those who are truly in need.”
FEMA and the Pacific Disaster Center stipulate that thousands of gallons of water and pre-packaged meals will be necessary each day to sustain displaced residents. Moreover, they estimate that shelter accommodations for up to 4,500 individuals will be required.
The fire’s impact left an estimated 2,207 structures in Lahaina either damaged or obliterated. As per damage assessments, the majority of these affected structures were residential in nature.
The Lehaina/Maui fire’s toll surpassed even that of the 2018 Camp Fire, which resulted in 85 fatalities. In the chronicles of Hawaii, it now holds the grim distinction of being the deadliest natural catastrophe ever recorded. Its impact rivals even the infamous 1918 Cloquet Fire in northern Minnesota, an event that claimed the lives of over 450 individuals.
The ferocious inferno that swept through Lahaina left behind a wake of devastation, causing extensive damage to or complete destruction of over 2,200 structures. The process of reconstruction is expected to carry a substantial price tag, with estimates exceeding $5.5 billion as per a report released by FEMA on a recent Saturday.
