Special counsel David Weiss has indicated his intention to indict Hunter Biden on gun-related charges by the end of September, as confirmed by a court filing. The filing stated that the government is required to obtain a grand jury indictment by September 29, 2023, at the earliest, in accordance with the Speedy Trial Act.
The charges stem from Hunter Biden’s alleged falsification of information on a federal form when purchasing a handgun in 2018, during a period when he admitted to being a drug user. Initially, a plea deal had been proposed that would have involved Hunter pleading guilty to misdemeanor tax violations and entering into a pre-trial diversion agreement in exchange for immunity from a felony gun charge. However, district judge Maryellen Noreika rejected this deal, citing concerns about the broad immunity offered to Hunter.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed David Weiss as a special counsel to oversee the ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden without the typical oversight of the Department of Justice. Following the collapse of the initial plea deal, a future trial is expected, and Hunter Biden’s former lawyer, Christopher Clark, withdrew from the case, citing his potential role as a witness in the upcoming trial.

The United States is reportedly experiencing a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in late summer, leading some schools, hospitals, and businesses to encourage or mandate the use of masks once again.
Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of earlier this month, indicates a nearly 19% increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations nationwide within a single week, along with a more than 21% increase in deaths.
CDC Director Mandy Cohen stated that in recent weeks, as many as 10,000 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 each week. However, she emphasized that this number is significantly lower than the peak of 40,000 weekly hospitalizations observed in the U.S. during the highest point of the pandemic in August last year.
The spike in cases and hospitalizations has prompted renewed concerns and precautions in various sectors of society, underscoring the ongoing challenges in managing and mitigating the impact of the virus.
