In the shadows of a September evening in 1977, France witnessed the chilling conclusion to its centuries-old use of the guillotine. The macabre apparatus, synonymous with executions during the French Revolution, found its final victim in Hamida Djanoubi. In the heart of Marseille, justice, or perhaps its twisted interpretation, unfolded as the blade fell, severing the last connection between the guillotine and French capital punishment.
Hamida Djanoubi’s execution marked a somber chapter in history, a moment frozen in time when the echoes of the guillotine’s descent reverberated through the nation. The aftermath, however, heralded a significant change. The cold, mechanical precision of the guillotine was forever stilled, as France chose to leave behind this grim method of death.
In 1981, the final note in this dark symphony was played when France officially abolished the death penalty. The guillotine, once an ominous fixture in the nation’s justice system, was relegated to the annals of history, leaving behind a haunting legacy of a bygone era.
