Body-worn camera footage from New York City police officers has captured a tense confrontation at Columbia University, where NYPD forcefully entered Hamilton Hall to disperse anti-Israel protesters who had barricaded themselves inside. The incident occurred on Tuesday night, and the video reveals officers in protective gear using tools to dismantle barriers set up by the protesters, who were singing “We shall not be moved” as police approached.
Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Tarik Sheppard explained that many involved were not Columbia students but were instead part of a group of seasoned agitators who travel across the country to engage in protests. Sheppard described these individuals as professional manipulators, capitalizing on the genuine passions of students to incite actions such as building takeovers.
The video shows police using a saw to cut through furniture used to block their entry, and at one point, an officer is heard ordering the deployment of a flashbang grenade to manage the crowd. The loud bangs that followed were part of the tactics used to disperse the protesters, who continued to chant “Free, free Palestine!” from outside the building.
This intervention by the NYPD was prompted by a formal request from Columbia University, which is among several institutions in the city that have sought police presence on their campuses due to ongoing protests. The situation highlights the increasing tension on college campuses over international issues and the challenges in balancing student activism with campus safety.

The U.S. House of Representatives has decisively passed a bill that seeks to broaden the federal definition of anti-Semitism, despite considerable dissent from civil liberties advocates. The bill, clearing the House with a vote of 320 to 91, now progresses to the Senate. This legislative move is primarily in response to the recent surge of antiwar demonstrations on university campuses across the nation.
The legislation aims to integrate the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism into Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This significant amendment could enable the federal Department of Education to take action, including the restriction of funding, against educational institutions perceived to be condoning anti-Semitic behaviors.
However, this bill has not been without its critics, who argue that the IHRA’s definition could potentially suppress legitimate campus protests against the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza, which has led to substantial Palestinian casualties. The IHRA definition includes statements that could classify certain criticisms of Israel as anti-Semitic, thereby conflating political criticism with genuine hate speech.
Civil rights groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have actively opposed the bill, cautioning that it could impede free speech on campuses by equating criticism of the Israeli government with anti-Semitism. Even within the House, voices like Representative Jerry Nadler have expressed concerns that the bill’s broad scope could unfairly encompass political speech about Israel under anti-discrimination laws, thus overreaching in its intent.
The bill’s advancement reflects ongoing tensions on how best to balance free speech with the need to combat anti-Semitism, amidst a backdrop of escalating university protests and unwavering governmental support for Israel. This development in the House indicates a significant, albeit controversial, step in addressing anti-Semitism while highlighting the complexities involved in legislating against hate speech without infringing on constitutional rights.

Ryan Gosling stars as a stuntman named Colt Seavers alongside Emily Blunt as a cinematographer, Jody Moreno. In this flashback, the two have a flirty conversation over the radio about having a drink after work as Colt prepares for a stunt on set.
For the scene, which involves Gosling’s character falling several stories inside a building, the “Fall Guy” director David Leitch said they opted to create the moment practically and have Gosling perform the stunt himself. This meant hooking the actor to a rig called a descender, used to drop a stunt performer off a building, and then a mechanism provides deceleration for the final 10 feet.
