The potency of cannabis products is directly linked to the likelihood of adverse effects, according to Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. “Those who consume the highest doses are the ones that are going to have the highest risk of becoming psychotic,” Volkow stated, emphasizing the dangers associated with high-THC products.
While research on the adverse effects of high THC levels is limited, a European study published in 2020 found that high-potency cannabis products posed a greater risk of hallucinations and delusions compared to lower potency varieties. Ziva Cooper, director of the Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids at UCLA, acknowledged the potential link between cannabis strength and an increased risk of psychosis, but noted that further research is necessary to confirm this association.
Studies suggest that as many as half of the individuals who experience cannabis-induced psychosis may eventually develop schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Young adults and teenagers are particularly vulnerable, as emphasized by Thurstone. “The studies that we have so far clearly indicate that the risk for psychosis is dose dependent,” he explained. “The more marijuana someone is exposed to, especially during adolescence, the greater the risk of developing psychosis, schizophrenia, and severe mental illness.” This underscores the importance of awareness and caution regarding the use of high-potency cannabis products, particularly among younger populations.
