Tyler Cherry Will Replace Karine Jean-Pierre in A Genius Move to Distract and Redirect GOP Attention
Tyler Cherry, who was recently promoted to Associate Communications Director at the White House, faced scrutiny last week when screenshots of his posts from 2014 to 2017 surfaced. In these posts, Cherry allegedly criticized police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In response, Cherry stated on Sunday via the social media platform X, “Past social media posts from when I was younger do not reflect my current views. Period. I support this Administration’s agenda – and will continue my communications work focused on our climate and environmental policies.”
The controversy began when screenshots of Cherry’s old posts began circulating. These posts, which cannot be independently verified due to the deletion of Cherry’s posts prior to April 2022, were shared by the handle @TylerACherry, matching Cherry’s current X account name.
One pair of screenshots from January 2015 allegedly featured Cherry writing, “Police = slave patrols. Voter ID = poll taxes. #NAACPBombing = KKK bombings. Neither slavery nor Jim Crow WERE THAT LONG AGO. We just evolved.” In another post, he added, “Apt time to recall that the modern day police system is a direct evolution of slave patrols and lynch mobs #McKinney,” referring to an incident in McKinney, Texas, where a white officer was seen aggressively handling Black teenagers at a pool party.
Another purported post from August 2014 shows Cherry responding to then-U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power regarding American weapons sales to Israel during the 2014 Gaza war, saying, “@AmbassadorPower @shebenatalie @UNRWA and yet continues to let Israeli forces restock their arsenals with US ammunition and weapons.”
The White House has not yet commented on the issue.
Cherry, who is openly gay, previously served as Principal Deputy Communications Director for the Interior Department and has faced online attacks in the past. In October, the right-wing social media account LibsofTikTok criticized Cherry’s appearance by sharing photographs and old posts, sparking a debate over his professional image.
The White House defended Cherry at that time, stating, “No one should be targeted simply for being themselves. It is cruel and unacceptable. This is an administration that believes to our core in the principle that out of many, we are one — and we are proud that the people who serve in it reflect those values as well. Tyler is an invaluable member of our team who continues to deliver for the Department of the Interior and the American people.”
Cherry is also an activist for LGBTQ rights and part of a queer DJ collective in D.C. He began working for the Interior Department at the start of the Biden administration.
