Former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) refrained from taking a definitive stance on whether President Joe Biden should continue his bid for re-election in 2024 or step aside for another Democratic candidate. During an appearance on MSNBC on Wednesday, Pelosi emphasized that the decision lies solely with President Biden.
“It’s up to the president to decide if he is going to run,” Pelosi stated. “We’re all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running short.”
Pelosi expressed her support for Biden’s autonomy in making this critical decision, saying, “I want him to do whatever he decides to do, and that’s the way it is. Whatever he decides, we go with.”
Pelosi’s comments arrive at a crucial juncture for Biden, who is working to consolidate his support base. Her endorsement, given her influential role as former House Speaker, would have carried significant weight.
Pelosi suggested postponing discussions about Biden’s political future until after the NATO summit he is hosting from Tuesday to Thursday in Washington. Following the summit, Biden is set to appear at his first press conference since his much-criticized debate performance.
National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby described the upcoming press conference as a “big boy press conference.”
“Let’s just hold off,” Pelosi advised during the interview. “Whatever you’re thinking, either tell somebody privately, but you don’t have to put that out on the table until we see how we go this week.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has expressed cautious support for Biden, while progressive Democrats have been vocal in their backing. In contrast, Democrats from swing states have shown hesitation, with at least six publicly calling for Biden to step aside.
Pelosi addressed concerns stemming from Biden’s debate performance, which included notable struggles and contentious claims. On July 2, she acknowledged the legitimacy of questioning whether Biden’s debate difficulties were an isolated incident or indicative of a broader condition, referencing his incorrect statement about troop casualties during his administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, where 13 American troops were killed.
As the debate over Biden’s future intensifies, Pelosi’s neutral stance underscores the importance of Biden’s own decision-making in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.

Biden’s Debate Performance Deepens Rift Between White House and Media
President Joe Biden’s widely criticized debate performance has seemingly intensified tensions between the establishment media and the White House press team. This friction became evident after Biden’s debate performance led to questions about his cognitive abilities, which the media, once accused by Republicans of shielding Biden, have begun to scrutinize more aggressively.
On Saturday, Axios’s Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen reported that Biden’s debate performance confirmed the decline that many establishment media reporters had previously overlooked.
The conflict reached a peak on Monday when White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre deflected questions about multiple visits by a Parkinson’s expert to the White House in 2023, citing security and privacy concerns. This response, reported by Axios, left many reporters dissatisfied. Jean-Pierre’s refusal to provide details, and her assertion that it was a privacy issue, contrasted with the later release of a letter from Biden’s doctor, which stated that the president has never been diagnosed with or treated for Parkinson’s. The letter explained that the expert’s visits were part of a general neurology practice for supporting White House operations.
Reporters expressed a preference for Jean-Pierre’s predecessor, Jen Psaki, citing her alleged adeptness at handling sensitive questions. White House spokesman Andrew Bates defended Jean-Pierre, stating she handles difficult questions daily with thorough answers and represents Biden’s agenda with integrity.
The strained relationship between the White House communication staff and the media, especially with the New York Times, continues to be problematic. The Times has been denied interviews with Biden, which the paper sees as essential to assess his fitness for office. According to Politico’s Eli Stokols, Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger believes that only such an interview can verify Biden’s capability to serve as president.
