Democratic political strategist James Carville has cautioned Democrats to brace themselves for a barrage of Republican attacks aimed at Vice President Kamala Harris, as the GOP seeks to reclaim the White House for former President Donald Trump. In an interview on PBS’s “Firing Line” with Margaret Hoover, released Monday, Carville stressed the need for Democrats to be prepared for the intense scrutiny and offensive strategies that Harris will face.

“Look, she’s gonna get slaughtered,” Carville stated candidly. “And [Democrats] have got to get up and get ready. And they’ve got to be able to defend and attack at the same time.”

Harris emerged as the likely Democratic nominee for president last week after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her. This shift has already altered the dynamics of the election, with polls indicating a close race and a noticeable boost in enthusiasm among Democrats for Harris compared to Biden.

Despite the initial excitement, Carville emphasized the importance of the upcoming weeks as both parties work to shape public perception of Harris. “There is going to be a time of struggle of definition as to who Vice President Harris is. And we better be ready for that,” he warned. “But I feel like we are in a better position today than we were Sunday morning [before Biden dropped out].”

Carville acknowledged that Harris’s candidacy has generated more enthusiasm than Biden’s, attributing this to a desire for change. “What happened was that people wanted something different, and that she just projects the fact that she is, you know, excited about the future,” he explained. Carville, who had previously expressed doubts about Biden’s reelection prospects, noted that the shift in candidate preference was driven by a general sentiment for an alternative to both Trump and Biden. “And there was no policy that anyone was pushing, and there was no particular group that was behind it. It was just a general feeling that people wanted a different choice than Donald Trump and President Biden. And they got it,” Carville concluded.
