President Joe Biden acknowledged his need for more rest and fewer working hours during a White House meeting with nearly two dozen Democratic governors. Biden, 81, admitted he should avoid events after 8 p.m., highlighting concerns about his ability to handle the demands of the presidency, which, according to a New York Times report, he can fully manage only between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The New York Times reported Biden’s comments, citing attendees and others briefed on the meeting. During the same gathering, when Hawaii Gov. Josh Green inquired about his health, Biden humorously responded, “just my brain,” though not everyone found it funny.
Biden’s campaign spokesman, Kevin Munoz, defended the president, stating that other presidents like George W. Bush and Barack Obama also managed their schedules to maintain a balance. Munoz contrasted this with Donald Trump, claiming Trump spends his days ranting on social media and golfing.
However, concerns about Biden’s age persist. Bush was 62 when he left office, and Obama was 55, while Biden would be 86 if he completed a second term. Recent reports suggest Biden’s cognitive issues are worsening. New York magazine reported that Biden struggles to remember names and relies on his wife, Jill Biden, for assistance during social events. Friends and associates have noted his increasing isolation and reliance on his staff.
These revelations come amid Biden’s insistence on running for a second term, despite a poor debate performance against Trump on June 27. Critics argue that Biden’s age and health are becoming more apparent and problematic.
Biden’s debate struggles were initially attributed to extensive foreign travel, though he had been in the Eastern Time Zone for 10 days prior, including a week of preparation at Camp David. The White House had also cited a “cold” as the cause, though Biden was still active, greeting patrons at a Waffle House after the debate.
Concerns about Biden’s schedule were further highlighted by a recent Axios report, noting his susceptibility to gaffes and fatigue outside his optimal hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. His campaign has since tried to reassure donors and supporters by hosting controlled events, including a fundraiser at New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s home, where Biden’s remarks were kept brief to avoid any missteps.
As Biden continues his campaign, the focus on his health and cognitive abilities is likely to intensify, with both supporters and opponents closely watching his every move.
