Vice President Kamala Harris delivered an unscripted speech on Thursday regarding the prisoner swap with Russia, which drew attention for its convoluted language. Harris emphasized the importance of diplomacy, stating, “This is just an extraordinary testament to the importance of having a president who understands the power of diplomacy and understands the strength that rests in understanding the significance of diplomacy.” Her remarks, accompanied by expressive gestures, follow a series of recent public missteps, including accidentally referring to herself as “president” during a eulogy for former Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

These incidents may contribute to Harris’s recent avoidance of media questions. Since becoming the Democratic Party’s de facto nominee, she has not participated in a significant interview, a strategy observed by both critics and supporters. Democrat strategist Christy Setzer told The Hill, “The vice president is showing all of us that you don’t need to do high-profile interviews or press conferences in order to get attention from the media or from voters. I’d say she has a robust communications strategy.”

Another potential reason for Harris’s media reticence could be the need to navigate questions about her shifting policy positions. Recently, Harris has appeared to modify her stance on several key issues. According to anonymous sources cited by the Washington Examiner and The New York Times, she no longer supports a federal job guarantee, now supports fracking, advocates for increased border security funding, opposes mandatory buybacks of assault weapons, and has retracted her support for a single-payer health insurance program. These adjustments indicate a significant recalibration of her policy approach.

Former President Donald Trump has announced that he has agreed to debate Vice President Kamala Harris in a presidential debate scheduled for September 4th. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the debate will be hosted by Fox News and moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

“I have agreed with FoxNews to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th,” Trump wrote. “The Debate was previously scheduled against Sleepy Joe Biden on ABC, but has been terminated as Biden will no longer be a participant, and I am in litigation against ABC Network and George Stephanopoulos, thereby creating a conflict of interest.”

Trump further elaborated that the debate will take place in Pennsylvania, although the specific location is yet to be determined. He emphasized that the debate rules will be similar to those of his previous debate with President Biden, and it will be conducted with a full arena audience.

Vice President Harris had earlier indicated her willingness to debate Trump, mentioning that he initially agreed to a September 10 debate but later seemed to backpedal.

During an interview aired on Fox News, Trump confirmed his intention to debate Harris, stating that the “answer is yes” and that he would “probably end up debating” the vice president.
