🔴Vice President Kamala Harris Remains Noncommittal on Additional Debates with Former President Donald Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris declined to confirm on Thursday whether she would accept former President Donald Trump’s challenge to participate in three separate debates. Trump proposed debating Harris on September 4 on Fox News, September 10 on NBC News, and September 25 on ABC News. While Harris agreed to the September 10 debate on NBC News, she refrained from commenting on the other two proposed dates.

In Wayne, Michigan, Harris stated, “I am looking forward to debating Donald Trump, and we have a date of September 10. I hear he’s finally committed to it, and I’m looking forward to it.” However, when asked about the allegations of “stolen valor” against her running mate, Governor Mike Walz, Harris sidestepped the issue, saying, “I praise anyone who has presented themselves to serve their country. And I think that we all should.”

Throughout the week, Harris faced criticism from Republicans for avoiding unscripted media engagements. During a Thursday press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump questioned her ability to handle press interactions, saying, “She’s not doing any news conference … She doesn’t know how to do a news conference. She’s not smart enough to do a news conference.”

Trump’s remarks appeared to prompt Harris to consider scheduling an interview “before the end of the month,” though she did not specify whether this would occur in August or if only the scheduling would be completed by then. “I’ve talked to my team. I want us to get an interview scheduled before the end of the month,” she said when asked about her plans for media engagement.

Since joining the presidential race 18 days ago, Harris has yet to hold an unscripted press conference. A longtime ally of Harris suggested to Politico’s West Wing Playbook that she might continue avoiding the press until Labor Day, which is still 25 days away.

Harris’s reluctance to participate in unscripted events may stem from two factors: her tendency to deliver awkward “word salads” and the ongoing policy debates within her party. Reports indicate that her campaign aides have reversed positions on several of her previous left-leaning policies, adding complexity to her campaign strategy.
