Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the current vice-presidential pick for Kamala Harris, is under fire on social media following accusations of “stolen valor.” The controversy stems from allegations that Walz has misrepresented his military service record, particularly by listing a higher rank than the one he retired with. In a recent speech at the AFSCME Convention, Walz addressed the criticism indirectly, focusing on his 24 years of service in the National Guard and his work on behalf of veterans in Congress. Without directly naming Trump’s VP pick JD Vance, Walz asserted, “I am damn proud of my service to this country. And I firmly believe you should never denigrate another person’s service record.”

This statement sparked significant backlash, especially among U.S. service members who felt that Walz was deflecting from the real issue. Retired Col. Rob Maness criticized Walz on X, stating, “No one is denigrating his actual service record, they’re denigrating the lies he tells about his service record. Walz is dishonoring himself by embellishing his military service record for political gain.” Similarly, retired USAF pilot Dale Stark added, “It’s not ‘degrading someone’s service record’ to point out that they lied about serving in combat repeatedly.”
