Senator JD Vance responded firmly to a CNN reporter’s question about former President Trump’s comments on Kamala Harris’s racial identity during a press conference at the U.S. southern border in Cochise County, Arizona. Vance, visiting the border on Thursday, criticized Harris’s record as the border czar. CNN correspondent Steve Contorno asked Vance if Trump’s recent remark at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention, suggesting Harris “became a Black person” after years of identifying as Indian, concerned him as the father of three biracial children. Vance, married to Usha Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants, with whom he shares three children, replied, “They don’t give me pause at all,” adding that Harris is a “chameleon” who changes her identity to suit her audience.

Vance continued, “Look, she’s running as a tough-on-crime prosecutor even though she implemented open border policies. She’s saying that she wants to support the police, yet she wanted to defund the police just three years ago. It’s totally reasonable to call out the fact that she pretends to be somebody different depending on the audience she’s talking to.” This response came after Trump, when asked by ABC News’ Rachel Scott if he agreed with lawmakers labeling Harris a “diversity, equity, and inclusion” hire, remarked on her changing racial identity, questioning whether she was Indian or Black.

This controversy follows Harris’s recent criticism on social media for using a Southern accent during a speech in Atlanta. The vice president, originally from California, told rally-goers, “You all helped us win in 2020 and we gonna do it again in 2024,” which critics online labeled as pandering.

At the National Association of Black Journalists Convention (NABJC) in Chicago on Wednesday, former President Donald Trump made controversial remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity. Trump claimed that Harris made a “sudden” change to identify as black.

During the event, Trump was asked if he believes Harris is “only on the ticket because she is a black woman.” Trump responded, “Well, I can say no. I think it’s maybe a little bit different. I’ve known her a long time indirectly — not directly very much — and she was always of Indian heritage. And she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black, and now she wants to be known as black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian, or is she black?”

ABC News’s Rachel Scott interjected, noting that Harris has always identified as a black woman, having attended a historically black college.

“I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t,” Trump continued. “Because she was Indian all the way, and then, all of a sudden, she made a turn, and she became a black person.”

These remarks have sparked significant backlash and debate about identity and heritage, highlighting the complexities and sensitivities surrounding racial identity in American politics.
