Indian-origin Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy criticized Vice President Kamala Harris at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Chicago, claiming that many Indian Americans in the US are offended by Harris “casting aside” her Indian identity. Speaking to Fox News, Ramaswamy highlighted that Harris leaned into her Indian American heritage when it was politically convenient in California but now emphasizes a different identity on the national stage. Ramaswamy, whose parents immigrated from the same region in India as Harris’s mother, expressed that Harris’s approach to identity politics opens her up to criticism and stated that her candidacy lacks a vision for the country. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump also attacked Harris’s racial identity, accusing her of “turning black” for political gain. Harris responded at a Houston fundraiser, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the future and accusing Trump of wanting to take the country backward. Harris, the first woman of color and the first Asian American vice president, has faced ongoing scrutiny over her heritage and identity as the US presidential election campaign intensifies.
