The devastating wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles have revealed a shocking level of unpreparedness and mismanagement within the city’s fire department, compounded by radical policy failures. Reports indicate that over 100 Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) vehicles, including critical fire trucks, were out of service due to maintenance backlogs during the height of the crisis. These vehicles sat idle in repair yards as infernos consumed thousands of homes and displaced countless residents. This glaring failure underscores systemic neglect and misallocation of resources within a department already burdened by severe budget cuts.

The lack of functional fire equipment was exacerbated by policy decisions that prioritized political agendas over public safety. Mayor Karen Bass slashed $17.6 million from the fire department’s budget in 2024, crippling its ability to respond effectively to large-scale disasters. Despite warnings of extreme fire risk due to high winds and dry conditions, proactive measures such as pre-deploying resources to high-risk areas were woefully insufficient. Hydrants ran dry in some of the hardest-hit neighborhoods, with the 117-million-gallon Santa Ynez Reservoir sitting empty due to prolonged neglect and repairs.

The incompetence extends to LAFD leadership, which defended its inadequate response as “appropriate” despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Deputy Chief Richard Fields and Fire Chief Kristin Crowley insisted their strategies were sound, even as 911 call volumes doubled, and firefighters were forced to battle flames without sufficient water or backup resources. Meanwhile, Mayor Bass faced sharp criticism for her absence, attending a diplomatic event in Ghana while her city burned. Her administration’s repeated failures, including the appointment of unqualified officials like Deputy Mayor Brian Williams—who is now embroiled in scandal—paint a grim picture of prioritizing political optics over competence.
