Selena Gomez, the self-appointed savior of the undocumented, has once again reminded us that Hollywood is a breeding ground for virtue signaling and performative activism. In a tearful Instagram video that can only be described as a masterclass in narcissism, the 32-year-old actress sobbed uncontrollably about the deportation of undocumented immigrants under President Trump’s administration. “I’m so sorry,” she sniffled to her 422 million followers. “I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything.” Cue the violins, the collective eyerolls, and the entirely predictable social media backlash.
For an actress worth a staggering $1.3 billion, Gomez’s display of “helplessness” would almost be laughable if it weren’t so utterly tone-deaf. What, exactly, is stopping her from doing “everything”? She has the resources, the connections, and the platform to fund legal aid services, sponsor immigrant families, or advocate for policy changes in meaningful ways. But no, instead, we are treated to a melodramatic Instagram Story — a fleeting, disposable piece of digital theatrics that accomplishes nothing except broadcasting her own emotions. Gomez’s tears might be real, but they seem less about genuine empathy and more about showcasing her self-proclaimed virtue to a global audience. After all, nothing says “I care” like crying into your iPhone and hoping your followers will validate your feelings.
