This past Memorial Day weekend was an opportunity to honor our fallen heroes and the memories of those who sacrificed their lives so that all Americans can be safe and live in freedom. President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence took the chance to pay homage in the best way possible. By attending Memorial Day ceremonies with those who have served. But what President Trump did will have everyone clapping.

The Daily Caller reported,

“President Trump honored World War II veteran and former senator Bob Dole for his lifetime of service during a Memorial Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery Monday. The president was thanking all of the men and women who have risked their lives to protect the lives of Americans, when he said, “America’s legacy of service is exemplified by a World War II veteran who joins us today, Senator Bob Dole.”

After a long ovation, Trump continued, “Earlier there year, I was fortunate to present — earlier this year, I was fortunate to present a very special award to Bob, the congressional gold medal.” Back in January, Senator Dole was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition for “his service to the nation as a soldier, legislator and and statesman.”
He added, “Bob, thank you for honoring us with your presence, and thank you for your lifetime of service to our nation. Today we remember your fallen comrades who never returned home from that great struggle for freedom.” Prior to his speech, Trump laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier.””

The President was paying tribute to fallen soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Throughout the day he laid wreaths throughout the cemetery and at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on a gray and chilly day. The crowd of people included Gold Star families, veterans, service members, and their families.

Dole is a former member of Congress and the Senate from Kansas who served in office for decades and later ran for the Republican presidential nomination and was chosen once as a vice presidential nominee.

During the 2016 presidential election, he initially supported former Florida Governor Jeb Bus but then later endorsed President Trump when he won the nomination.

Dole was also a highly decorated veteran of World War II who served in the 10th Mountain Division of the United States Army from 1942 to 1947. For his exemplary service, he was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. The injuries he sustained during the war left him with limited mobility in his right arm and in his left arm he was left with permanent numbness. Throughout his public service, he tried minimizing the effect and notice people would have of the injuries by holding a pen in his right hand.

The Washington Post reported,

“Captain Stubenhofer was k****d by sniper fire just months after his wife gave birth to a daughter they named Hope, Mr. Trump said. The president said he had met Sergeant Jacobs’s son, 7-year-old Christian, at last year’s wreath-laying ceremony: “Christian walked over to me, with great confidence, shook my hand, looked me straight in the eye and asked if I would like to meet his dad. He loved his dad.”

Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis spoke before Mr. Trump. Other members of Mr. Trump’s cabinet and White House aides — including Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary; Donald F. McGahn II, the White House counsel; and John R. Bolton, the national security adviser — were also in attendance.
Mr. Trump’s prepared speech stood in sharp contrast to his Twitter posts earlier Monday morning, in which he continued to criticize the Russia investigation — again referring to his unsubstantiated claim that the F.B.I. spied on his campaign. In another post, he celebrated the economy, boasting about low unemployment rates for African-Americans, Latinos and women. He wished Americans a happy Memorial Day in the same tweet.”

Dole amongst the numerous other veterans honored by the President deserved the recognition they received. President Trump has gone out of his way to ensure that veterans, service members, and their families get the respect that they deserve. That is exactly what they got on Memorial Day.
