President Trump shook the globe today when he canceled the scheduled summit for peace negotiations in Singapore with North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un. He attributed the withdrawal to North Korea’s “tremendous anger and open hostility.” The meeting was scheduled for June 12th and was to be the first face-to-face meeting between North Korea and a sitting President of the United States. It would have been historic.

“Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,” Trump wrote in a letter to Kim. The President dictated every word of the letter himself, a senior White House official told reporters. He had spoken earlier this week of walking away from the talks and Trump is a man who keeps his word. Not only was Kim insulting and inciting aggression, Trump no longer believes he can honestly be dealt with or that the meeting is in the best interests of the US.

Testifying before lawmakers on Capitol Hill, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that North Korean officials had failed to respond to numerous inquiries from the US about gathering “preparation teams” ahead of the June 12th summit. “We had received no response to our inquiries from them,” he said. The NoKos have broken off communications with us.
A great deal of President Trump’s letter was gracious and friendly. Trump left the door open for Kim and thanked him for the “wonderful dialogue” that had developed in recent weeks between the two nations. “If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write,” the President said. “The world, and North Korea in particular has lost a great opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth.” He added: “This missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history.” The President also expressed his gratitude for the release of the three American hostages from North Korea earlier this month.

But President Trump also responded to the threats from North Korea. “You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used.” The White House also stated today that the US military is “ready if necessary” to respond to “any foolish or reckless act” by Pyongyang.

For context, the letter reads in full:

May 24, 2018

His Excellency
Kim Jong Un
Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democractic People’s Republic of Korea
Pyongyang

Dear Mr. Chairman:

We greatly appreciate your time, patience, and effort with respect to our recent negotiations and discussions relative to a summit long sought by both parties, which was scheduled to take place on June 12 in Singapore. We were informed that the meeting was requested by North Korea, but that to us is totally irrelevant. I was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting. Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place. You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used.

I felt a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me, and ultimately it is only that dialogue that matters. Some day, I look very much forward to meeting you. In the meantime, I want to thank you for the release of the hostages who are now home with their families. That was a beautiful gesture and was very much appreciated.

If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write. The world, and North Korea in particular, has lost a great opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth. This missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history.
