An international flight got a lot more uncomfortable thanks to one passenger. Air marshals were required to intervene after her bizarre behavior put everyone’s safety at risk.

Long lights are never fun. Even short flights can be terrible if the conditions deteriorate. Flying across the ocean, from continent to continent, that’s an entirely different story. You’re contained in a small space, flying over the earth at 30,000 feet. So many things can go wrong, very quickly.

The best thing you can do is stay calm and try to relax. Airlines do their best (sometimes) to help you enjoy the flight. They provide movies, refreshments, and even pillows and blankets. For most travelers, these are enough to help them survive a long flight.

But not everyone. Some people just aren’t cut out for air travel. That’s just what one flight learned after a woman reacted during a trip from London to Salt Lake City. Everything seemed to be going well, for a while. Then, this passenger started to have a breakdown of sorts. Things all came to a head when air marshals were asked to intervene. Even that wasn’t enough. Now, the woman is facing charges, all because she couldn’t sit still.
Sarah Maria Beach, 45, was on a flight from London to Salt Lake City, Utah, when she allegedly went on a rampage that ultimately left her handcuffed for the remainder of the trip, FOX13 Salt Lake City reported. She doused coffee on passengers, knocked over a drink cart and “repeatedly” ran up and down the aircraft’s aisle, the criminal complaint stated…

“She literally sprinted down the end. And I mean she’s only a small woman, really,” Nicholls recalled to the news station. “Everyone’s becoming very concerned because, I thought, we’re at 30-odd thousand feet over the sea. What if she tried to open the door? She couldn’t get to the back door but then she ran again.” [Source: Fox News]

I wonder what caused Beach to break down? Perhaps she was suffering from an unrelated mental health problem. A flight from London to Salt Lake City is very long. After a few hours cooped up in a single seat, it makes sense that someone gets stir crazy, but this woman’s actions genuinely worried the other passengers.

Was she going to open one of the doors? Could she make it to the cockpit and cause a crash? These are legitimate concerns when you’re 30,000 feet in the air.
Air marshals were requested to deal with the American citizen. It seemed to work… for a little bit.

The flight attendants then asked the federal air marshals on the flight to help with Beach. The unruly passenger was initially calm with the air marshals and escorted her to the bathroom three times.

“After she finished in the bathroom the third time, she jumped on the back of one of the air marshals and placed her hands on his head, neck and jawline,” the complaint stated.

Yikes. You know it’s bad when air marshals can’t get someone to calm down. These people are trained to deal with high-stress situations on planes. Yet even with their help, Beach still was freaking out. One of the poor marshals got a dose of her crazy, right in his face. Clearly, she was attempting to injure the man. Thankfully, she wasn’t successful.
Once the plane landed, Beach was properly charged with a misdemeanor. On top of that, she is ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Perhaps all she needs is a little bit of medication or care. Something to make sure this kind of meltdown doesn’t happen again. Hopefully, her plane ride back to London will be much better.
