As Our Country Celebrated Memorial Day, Chicago Reached New Horrible Milestone

Millions of Americans honored Memorial Day by remembering our fallen heroes. But in the city of Chicago, something else was happening. It reached a new, terrible milestone, even for that city.
Memorial Day weekend is a special time for Americans. Considered the “unofficial” start of summer, many families take to the road to kick off their vacations. There are plenty of outdoor parties and grilling. People take an extra day off to relax and enjoy the warm weather.
Aside from the fun, it is an opportunity to show our veterans the respect they deserve. Memorial Day is a time when we can remember the men and women who sacrificed their lives so we can be free. Across the country, there are special events commemorating the day. Millions of Americans take the time to thank and celebrate those who paid the ultimate price.
Something else was going on, however, in the city of Chicago. The liberal-run city reached an all-new low. Despite the holiday, the criminals of Chicago did not take the day off. The Memorial Day weekend was marked with shootings. Numerous people were hurt and killed. In fact, the violence topped last year.
Memorial Day weekend proved even bloodier than last year in Chicago.
At least eight people were killed and 25 others wounded in shootings across the city since midnight Friday, police told WLS. Last year, over the entire weekend of the unofficial start of summer, seven people were killed and 45 others were hurt.
The victims, WLS reported, include China Marie Lyons-Upshaw, who was shot in the chest while playing with a gun; Bobbieana Lyons, 20, a young mother shot and killed on her doorstep while celebrating her 2-year-old’s birthday; and a 31-year-old man shot twice in the chest and once in the head after he got into a fight with another man. Isn’t it ironic that the city with the toughest gun control laws has some of the worst accounts of gun violence? The gun violence is so high in Chicago, it throws off the rest of the nation’s average. It’s also no surprise that the city has been run by Democrats for so long
The corrupt officials who run Cook County don’t care about cleaning up their streets. They exploit the poverty and frustrations of many of their residents, to make themselves rich and powerful. But have liberal city leaders done anything to improve the situation?
Chicago suffers from a weak economy and poor education. The best that many of its residents can hope for is government assistance. Many have attested to the fact that they are afraid to even leave their homes. To make matters worse, the city denies them their basic Second Amendment rights. They can’t even defend themselves.
To try and reduce the grim statistics, police had been trying to curb gun violence by employing 1,300 extra officers on patrol with help from state and federal partners…
The crimes come days after President Donald Trump tweeted about how Chicago police are unable to properly do their jobs because of the city’s bureaucracy.
“The killings are at a record pace and tough police work, which Chicago will not allow, would bring things back to order fast … the killings must stop!” Trump tweeted. [Source: Fox News]
The police work overtime to keep Chicago safe. But, once again, Democrats get in the way. It’s clear they do not care about law and order. They don’t care about the safety and well-being of their own citizens. Mayor Rahm Emanuel (and the rest of his mob of liberals) attack the police — the one group that is trying to keep people alive. His toxic policies are only making the city worse.
“You are more concerned with consent decrees, settlements, pandering to police-hating groups than negotiating a contract with us,” said Patrick Murray, union vice president, according to the newspaper report. “Our members are starting to believe you have no intention of negotiating a contract with us until after the next election.” [Source: Fox News]
Because of that, lives were needlessly lost this Memorial Day weekend. A time of celebration and reflection became one of tragedy. And it was entirely preventable.
