Actually when Zappa and the Mothers played with the Grateful Dead, Zappa almost fired everyone in the band when he found out they were hanging with the Dead.
Zappa was crazy enough as is without drugs.

Zappa very rarely drank. He smoked a lot, but he didn’t enjoy being out of control, so he was not a big fan of other drugs.
