Secretary of Defense Jame Mattis said Wednesday that the United States military is ready to take action to stop the Iranian government from developing nuclear weapons. Mattis also stated that should diplomacy fail, the military is ready to use force, Mac Slavo at SHTFplan.com. reports.
According to Military.com, Mattis made the comments as he was responding to questions from Senator Patty Murray, D-Washington, who said the risk of war had “dramatically increased” following President Donald Trump’s announcement Tuesday that the U.S. is withdrawing from the international agreement to rein in Iran’s nuclear programs.
“We maintain military options because of Iran’s bellicose statements and threats,” he said at a hearing of the Senate Defense Appropriations subcommittee, and “those plans remain operant.” Mattis did say that diplomacy is his first choice, however, he added that the military plans are ready. “We are always updating those plans” for the military option. “It’s a constant. The plans are updated as rapidly as needed.”
“We will continue to work alongside our allies and partners to ensure that Iran can never acquire a nuclear weapon, and will work with others to address the range of Iran’s malign influence, This Administration remains committed to putting the safety, interests, and well-being of our citizens first.” Mattis told a Senate panel, Breitbart reports.
Despite his comments, Mattis may find allies, and former co-signatories of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), more commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, unwilling to play along. P5+1 members France, Britain and Germany have all condemned Trump’s unilateral decision on May 8 to withdraw from the agreement and have pledged to continue working with Tehran.
UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told parliament on Wednesday that, given Trump’s hasty and unilateral decision to renege on the nuclear deal, the onus was on the US to provide and describe, in detail, a suitable alternative solution to manage the countries’ “shared concerns.”
“President Trump said himself last night that he is committed to finding a new solution and we should hold him to his word… The question is: how does the U.S. propose to achieve it?” Johnson said, adding that the UK remained committed to the JCPOA, “for as long as Iran abides by the agreement.”
French President Emmanuel Macron made an urgent call for a “de-escalation” of hostilities between Iran and Israel on Thursday.
Macron said in an interview with the German weekly Der Spiegel published on the weekend that the US withdrawal from the deal could open a “Pandora’s Box”, adding: “There could be a war.”
Meanwhile, French government spokesperson Benjamin Griveaux told reporters that the EU may go to the World Trade Organization (WTO) if the US economic strategy towards Iran causes collateral damage to European interests, Breitbart reports.
“The European Union is ready to challenge at the WTO any unilateral measure that would hurt the interests of European companies and respond in a proportionate manner, in accordance of course with the rules of that international organization,” Griveaux said.
Europe can no longer count on the US in defense and must take matters into its own hands, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, who also said: “Something should be done.”
“It’s no longer the case that the United States will simply just protect us,” Merkel said in a speech honoring President Macron, who came to Aachen to receive the prestigious Charlemagne Prize. Receiving a round of applause, Merkel stated: “Rather, Europe needs to take its fate into its own hands. That’s the task for the future.
