Mosul – Iraqi police forces have arrested six Islamic State militants in the group’s former bastion, Mosul, a police official was quoted saying on Thursday.

Spokesperson of the Interior Ministry, Saad Maan, said in a statement that the six were arrested in al-Wahda neighborhood in eastern Mosul after a raid of searches, adding that those arrested had arrest warrants issued for them based on the anti-terrorism law, Iraqi News reports.
But even after Iraq declared that the militants lost their territorial influence, the group seems to continue to represent a security concern, launching several attacks against security and civilians and causing several deaths.

For example, ISIS killed twenty Iraqi security personnel in an ambush in southwest of Kirkuk earlier this week.

According to Amaq website, the group’s media arm, “ISIS members killed 20 Iraqi security personnel and burnt five vehicles in an ambush on Sunday evening, southwest of al-Riyad town in Kirkuk.”

“We took several measures to protect our borders with Syria from the remnants of ISIS,” Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi said, adding that “Daesh (IS) will never penetrate into Iraq again.”

The Iraqi-Syrian borders are under the control of joint troops of military and border guards.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced, in December, full liberation of Iraqi lands, declaring end of war against IS members.

Thousands of ISIS militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.

As many as 3,298 civilians were killed and 4,781 others were wounded in 2017, excluding Anbar civilian casualty figures for November and December, which are not available, UNAMI said in a report in December.

The war against IS has so far displaced at least five million people.

So, while ISIS is almost completely eliminated, there are still some of them out there that need to be killed.

They are like cockroaches but we’ll get them all soon.
